Use jobs, funding, M&A, and re-engagement as signals

Use jobs, job changes, funding, mergers and acquisitions, and re engagement as reasons to review an account or contact. These events can create useful context, but none of them proves buying intent on its own.

For every signal, define the business hypothesis, verify the available evidence, and choose a proportionate next action. Re-engagement also requires careful checks of previous relationships, ownership, replies, and opt-outs.

Before you start

  • Define why the selected event could matter to your offer.
  • Specify the time period, region, company profile, roles, and exclusions.
  • Choose who reviews the results and who owns any existing relationship.
  • Decide the next action for each priority: monitor, review, draft, CRM handover, or exclude.
  • For re-engagement, confirm that CRM and contact history are accessible to the reviewer.

Choose a signal and test the hypothesis

Source where availableWhat it can indicateWhat to verify
Find companies that are hiringA company is advertising roles that may relate to growth or a defined operational need. The role, location, posting date, company fit, and why the hiring pattern matters to your offer.
Track job changesA known person has moved role or company and may have a new context. The change is current, the person is still relevant, and existing ownership or opt-out rules permit review.
Startup funding roundsA company has announced financing that may change priorities or capacity. The source, date, round context, company fit, and an action that does not assume budget.
Mergers & acquisitionsA corporate change may create integration, consolidation, or ownership questions. The parties, status, timing, relevance, and whether outreach would be appropriate.
Contacts to re-engageA previous contact may be worth reviewing again according to your workspace logic.Opt-out, last reply, last activity, CRM status, owner, other lists, and the reason to reconnect.

Protect existing contacts

Re-engagement starts with contact history, not with a new message. A previous contact may already belong to an account owner, appear in another list, have replied, become a customer, or opted out.

  • Review the CRM record and current account status.
  • Check the person’s owner and the team’s handover rule.
  • Read previous replies and the most recent meaningful activity.
  • Check opt-out, blacklist, exclusion, and suppression status.
  • Review Other Lists and recent or active campaigns.
  • Use a new, factual reason to reconnect; do not pretend the relationship is new.

Steps

  1. **Choose the source. **Select Find companies that are hiring, Track job changes, Startup funding rounds, Mergers & acquisitions, or Contacts to re-engage where it is available.
  2. **Define scope. **Set a relevant period, region, role or event criteria, company fit, and explicit exclusions.
  3. **Write the hypothesis. **State why this event could justify review and which persona would be relevant.
  4. **Define priorities and actions. **Map each signal priority to monitoring, manual review, a draft, CRM handover, or exclusion.
  5. **Set a small first limit. **Use a sample your team can inspect before widening the source or refresh scope.
  6. **Verify the signal. **Check the source context, date, company, person, and whether the event is current.
  7. **Check relationship history. **Review owner, CRM status, prior outreach and replies, opt-outs, other lists, and blacklists.
  8. **Prepare factual messaging only when appropriate. **Refer to the verified event without asserting budget, urgency, or a need the source does not support.
  9. **Approve the next action. **Keep uncertain results in manual review rather than moving them directly to outreach.

Use the signal without overstating it

The safest message uses the event as context and makes no claim about hidden intent. A job posting can show that a role is advertised; funding can show that a round was announced; a job change can show a new role. The source does not automatically reveal priorities, available budget, or interest in your product.

  • State only facts supported by the available source.
  • Use neutral language such as “I saw that…” rather than “You must be…”
  • Avoid sensitive or personal interpretations.
  • If the signal is weak, monitor the account or perform manual research instead of messaging.
  • Keep channel permissions, sender ownership, limits, and delays separate from the signal decision.

Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
You cannot find job postings as a sourceLook for Find companies that are hiring under the current jobs or changes sources. Do not substitute a generic tracker unless it supports the same outcome.
Old contacts appear againThat can be expected for re-engagement. Check opt-out, owner, last activity, previous replies, CRM status, and other lists before any activation.
A signal produces too many companiesNarrow the period, region, role, company fit, and exclusions. Reduce the first limit and review another sample.
The signal is accurate but the message feels speculativeUse only the verified event and remove assumptions about budget, urgency, pain, or buying intent. Choose monitoring or manual review if there is no useful factual angle.
The owner or previous relationship is unclearPause the record and resolve ownership in Signalist or the CRM before preparing outreach.

Frequently asked questions

Does a funding round mean the company has budget for our product?

No. It confirms a financing event only when supported by the source. Treat budget and priorities as unknown until verified.

Why would I track job changes?

A new role or employer can create a useful reason to review an existing relationship. Confirm that the change is current and that ownership, opt-out, and relevance checks permit follow-up.

What is different about re-engagement?

It starts from a previous relationship. Review the CRM record, owner, last reply, last activity, other lists, campaigns, exclusions, and opt-out status before deciding on a new action.

Can I send automatically when a signal appears?

Only use automation available and approved in your workspace. Keep a manual review when evidence, relevance, ownership, or messaging could be uncertain.

What should I do when a signal is relevant but not actionable?

Assign a monitoring or manual-research action instead of outreach. Define what additional evidence would make it actionable.

How do I avoid mentioning sensitive assumptions?

Refer only to the verified public event and its direct facts. Do not infer personal circumstances, financial pressure, budgets, or internal plans.
