Upload people, companies, and job titles via XLSX

Upload an Excel file (XLSX) when you already know which people, companies, or job titles you want. Signalist matches each row, enriches it, and scores the leads. A clean file and the right upload type make the difference between a useful list and a lot of "Not found".

Choose the upload type

Click Create new list, choose Upload & webhook, and pick the tile that matches your data:

TileUse it when you haveMinimum columns
Upload a list of peopleSpecific people you want to reach.A personal LinkedIn URL, or a first and last name (or full name) together with the company name, website, or LinkedIn page.

Optional columns help with matching: email address, job title, company country, or personal country.

Prepare the file

  • Only .xlsx files are accepted, and only the first sheet is read.
  • Use one header row and one row per person or company.
  • Keep one kind of value per column, and use plain values instead of formulas.
  • Prefer the company website or LinkedIn page when company names are ambiguous.
  • Leave out anything Signalist does not need, such as internal notes.

Upload and map the columns

  1. In the source step, click Upload an XLSX file and drop the file in, or choose it. The list is named after the file; you can change the name.
  2. Signalist analyses your columns and suggests a mapping. Check every column: map it to a Signalist field, choose Save as Custom Field to keep it, or Do Not import.
  3. Upload stays greyed out until one of the minimum combinations above is mapped.
  4. Preview shows how the first rows will look in Signalist. It does not run anything yet.

After the upload, Signalist shows statistics: rows detected, rows ready to process, duplicates in the file, and, for company lists, how many companies are already known.

Company lists: people per company and preview

For a company list, choose under People per company how many people Signalist should find at each company (1 to 3). It costs 1 credit per company, whether or not a person is found, plus 1 credit for each additional person.

Start Preview tries the search on a sample of companies first. It shows who was Found, Unsure, Not Found, or Skipped, the Credits used, and the Est. full list credits. Re-run Preview lets you keep the leads already found or start over.

Company lists: enrich companies first, find people later

By default, Signalist searches for people at each company as soon as the company is added. If you want to review the companies first and pay for people only at the companies you pick, choose this in the list's Find person step, under When should we search for people?:

OptionWhat happens
Find people now (default)Each qualifying company is searched with your search profiles as soon as it is added.
Only enrich companies, find people laterCompanies are enriched, qualified, and scored, but nobody is searched yet. Nothing is charged for finding people while the list runs.

The choice is offered for Upload a list of companies and Request us to scrape a list of companies. You still set up at least one search profile and People per company: they are the defaults when you search later. Start Preview still runs a real search on a sample and is charged as usual.

The Companies tab

In this mode, the companies appear on the list's Companies tab, after Ignored. Each row shows the company's score, segment, number of employees, and country. The People column tells you whether anyone has been searched:

  • No person searched yet, with a Find person link
  • Searching for people…
  • the people found, for example 2 people · in New
  • No person found at the company, with the date of the search
  • Didn't fit the ICP filter · not searched
  • Blacklisted

Filter the tab by these states with Show. The companies on this tab are not leads: they do not appear on New and are not counted as not found. They also stay on the tab until you search them; they are not moved to Ignored over time.

Find people at the companies you pick

  1. On the Companies tab, select companies with their checkboxes, or click Find person in a single row.
  2. Click Find person in the bar at the bottom.
  3. The window Find people at N selected companies is pre-filled with the list's search profiles. Change them for this run, pick a saved preset, or change how many people to find per company.
  4. Check the cost before you start: 1 credit per company searched, whether or not someone is found, and 1 more credit for each additional person. Email and phone lookups for the people found follow the list's settings; the window lists them with their cost.
  5. Click Find people at N companies. Each row updates when its company has been searched, usually within a few minutes. The people found are added to New and shown on their company's row.

Change the choice later

Open the list, click Find Person at the top, and pick the other option. The change applies only to companies added from then on. Companies already on the Companies tab stay there; select them and use Find person.

Job-title screening

For job-title uploads, and people uploads with a job title column, Screen job titles before enrichment checks each title against your personas first. Titles that clearly do not fit, for example Head of HR when you sell to sales teams, are left out before any enrichment is paid for. Screening costs 0.1 credits per new job title; titles your workspace has already seen are free. If you switch it off, every contact is enriched.

Check the result

When the list has run, its leads are sorted into Found, Unsure, Not found, and Blacklist, and the source's statistics show how many companies and people were found, merged, not found, or excluded.

Signalist looks up every company in your file: for a company upload, each company in it; for a people upload, the company of each person. If looking up a company takes too long, Signalist tries it once more before the list finishes. A company that still could not be researched is not counted as not found, and no lead is added for it under Not found. Instead, the list does not read Done: the list overview and the list page show a note, for example "3 companies could not be researched — re-run the list to try them again". Click Re-Run List on the list page to try those companies again. Companies that were already researched are not looked up again.

  • Open a few found leads and check that Signalist matched the right person or company.
  • Look at the Exclusion Reason of leads that were not found or were excluded.
  • In company lists, a person who no longer works at the company is placed in Unsure with the reason Does not work there anymore. A person who turns out to work at a different company is placed in Unsure too, or in Not found when Signalist has neither their LinkedIn profile nor their email. Check these leads before you reach out.
  • Correct the file or the mapping and upload again if many rows failed for the same reason.

To avoid adding people who are already on another list, switch on Only add new leads that have not been added to other lists before in the list's settings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload a CSV file?

No. Save the file as .xlsx first.

Which columns give the best matches?

A personal LinkedIn URL for people, and the company website or LinkedIn page for companies. A name alone is often ambiguous.

What does an upload cost?

1 credit per person found. For company lists, 1 credit per company plus 1 for each additional person. Job-title screening costs 0.1 per new title. With Only enrich companies, find people later, the find-person credits are charged only when you run Find person, and only for the companies you selected.

Can I review the companies before Signalist searches for people?

Yes. Choose Only enrich companies, find people later in the list's Find person step. The companies are scored and shown on the Companies tab, and you run Find person on the ones you want.

Is Preview a test run?

For people and job-title uploads, Preview only shows how the rows will look. For company lists, Start Preview runs a real search on a sample.

Is a company that could not be researched counted as not found?

No. It stays open, and Re-Run List looks it up again. Only a company Signalist searched for and could not find ends up under Not found.
